Founder & Director Women's Empowerment Link(WEL)
Every time a country, a region or a continent fails to uphold Women human rights they reduce their social and economic growth. Violence against women affects the victims/survivors but its impact is heaveier to the immediate & extended family, community and the country. e.g. If a woman is battered she is admitted in hospital her children unattended, the children seek refuge among neighbours; her family take up the children but they cannot take care of them, the children become delinquent and become a threat / security risk ; and the cycle continues. Women issues must be given due diligence!

Language Barrier is still a problem in Botswana
Botswana has two official languages in which programmes for empowering women are run, this has left out other women living in rural areas of Botswana not covered because of the language barrier. This means such women can not benefit from the econimic gains, they don't even khow that they are protected by the law. How can you help us?

Call for Applications
Research and Training Institute on Women's Rights and Citizenship

Political Studies at Wits University and the Women’s Rights and Citizenship Programme at IDRC

are pleased to announce a Research and Training Institute on Women’s Rights and Citizenship,

to be held at Wits University from 22 June- 3 July 2009 and 22-29 November 2009. The aim of the

Institute is to deepen the capacity of researchers to deploy feminist theories and methodologies

in applied, policy-oriented research. The Institute has two components: a training institute (22

June – 3 July), followed by a further week of training 22-29 November), and seed funding to

develop fully-fledged research proposals in the area of women’s rights, citizenship and governance

in sub-Saharan Africa.

We invite applications from research teams of 2-3 African researchers based in African

institutions, and working in the area of gender, citizenship and governance.

Research teams could be flexible in composition, for example a mix of university-based and

NGO-based researchers, a senior researcher with a PhD and two Masters/ Doctoral level

students, or exclusively university or NGO-based. Research teams could also cut across more

than one institution, for example two research centres. Ideally, we would prefer that the team

consist of a senior researcher with a PhD and two young researchers with four-year or Masters

degrees. We particularly encourage women researchers to apply.

All expenses (travel, accommodation and meals, and course materials) will be covered by the

Institute. Successful participants will be provided with seed grants of CAD10 000 to conduct

baseline research and develop full research proposals by 31 October.

Interested researchers should contact Nurina Ally (Nurina.Ally@students.wits.ac.za) for a

detailed application package and further information. The deadline for applications is Monday
March 16 2009.
